The Appliance is the Easy Part

Delivery drops the range in the kitchen and leaves. What happens next is the part that decides whether it works properly and whether it is safe: the connection behind it, the shutoff beside it, and whether the line feeding it can carry what the appliance actually draws.

Most of the time that is straightforward. Sometimes it isn’t, and the moment it isn’t is almost always the same moment: the new appliance draws more than the old one did. A tankless water heater in place of a tank is the obvious case, but a pool heater or an outdoor kitchen will do it too.

What Gets Connected, and What Each One Asks For

Ranges & Cooktops

Ranges and cooktops are the most common first gas appliance in a house, and usually the smallest draw on the system.

Gas Dryers

Gas dryers are simple to connect and easy to get wrong, because the connector behind a dryer gets crushed against the wall when the machine is pushed back.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters are the one that most often turns into a bigger job. A typical tank draws something like 40,000 BTU. A whole-house tankless unit can draw up to 199,000. The unit will physically fit on the old line. It won't perform on it.

Pools & Spas

Pool and spa heaters are the largest residential gas load most homes here will ever carry, and in this climate they are the closest thing to a heating season. Nobody in Miami-Dade is running a furnace. Plenty of people want the pool usable in January.

Outdoor Kitchens

Outdoor kitchens, grills and fire features are their own category, because the line has to get outside and usually underground to do it.

Standby Generators

Standby generators sit at the top of the load list. If one is anywhere in your plans, it changes the sizing conversation for everything else.

Outdoor Living is a Fourth-Quarter job Here

The seasons run backwards compared with most of the country. The pleasant stretch is roughly November through April, which is also when the seasonal residents and the visitors arrive. Summer is the quiet, hot, wet half of the year.

That shapes when this work makes sense. An outdoor kitchen, a fire feature or a pool heater wants to be finished before the season it is for, which means the planning happens in the late summer and the early autumn, not in December when the weather is already good and everyone else has had the same idea.

Getting gas to an outdoor kitchen usually means an underground run, and underground here means working above a water table that sits close to the surface. It’s ordinary work. It’s just not the same job as a connection behind a stove, and a quote that treats it as one hasn’t looked at the route.

Two Things Worth Knowing About Appliance Connectors

A flexible appliance connector isn’t permanent hardware. It has a service life, and it’s not meant to be carried from an old appliance to a new one. When a range gets replaced and the connector stays, that is a twenty-year-old part holding up a brand new install.

And a connector never passes through a wall, a floor, a cabinet back or a partition. That is a code rule everywhere, not a local one, and it is one of the more common things found in work a homeowner or a delivery crew did themselves. If you can see a flexible connector disappearing into a hole, that’s worth raising with somebody.

One more, for anyone bringing an appliance from another house: gas appliances are built for one fuel. Moving one between propane and natural gas needs the manufacturer’s conversion kit and an orifice change, and it can only be done at all if the maker lists that model as convertible. Two ranges that look identical on the showroom floor are not interchangeable once they are plumbed.

Tankless Water Heaters

A tankless unit is a real upgrade, and it is the appliance most likely to need the gas line looked at before anything gets mounted on a wall. The capacity question and the venting question both have to be answered first. There is more detail on our tankless water heaters page.

Tankless Water Heater Hookup & Installation

A gas connection is tested, not eyeballed. That means a pressure check on the work rather than soap at the joints and a shrug, a shutoff valve within reach of the appliance, and a sediment trap where the appliance calls for one. It also means the line feeding it was sized for the load rather than assumed to be fine because something used to run there.

Questions About Gas Appliance Installation

Here are answers to the questions South Florida homeowners ask us most. Need something else? Just give us a call — we’re happy to help.

Ranges and cooktops, gas dryers, tankless and tank water heaters, pool and spa heaters, outdoor kitchens, grills and fire features. The appliance itself is rarely the hard part. What decides the job is whether the existing line can carry the load and how far the gas has to travel to reach it.

Usually. A typical 40 gallon tank draws around 40,000 BTU and a whole-house tankless unit can draw up to 199,000. The unit will connect to the old line and then fail to hold temperature when more than one tap is open, which gets reported as a faulty heater when it is really a starved one. Check the line before buying the unit.

No. Flexible appliance connectors have a service life and are not designed to be moved from one appliance to another. A connector also must never pass through a wall, a floor or a cabinet back. If you can see one disappearing into a hole behind an appliance, that needs sorting regardless of anything else.

Only if it is set up for the same fuel. Appliances are built for either natural gas or propane, and moving one between the two needs the manufacturer’s conversion kit and an orifice change. Some models are listed as convertible and some are not, so the model number is the first thing to check, before it goes in the truck.

Late summer or early autumn, so it is finished before the season you want it for. The pleasant months here run roughly November through April, and that is also when everyone else decides they want the same thing. If the line has to run underground to reach an outdoor kitchen, that is the part that takes planning rather than the appliance.
