Sizing is the Whole Job

Most people call about one appliance. A range, a dryer, a pool heater, a generator. The pipe that feeds it is the part nobody thinks about, and it’s the part that decides whether the install goes smoothly or turns into a second visit.

A gas line is sized against everything on it at once, not against the appliance you’re adding today. Length of the run matters, so does every elbow and tee, and so does the supply pressure you are starting from. Get it wrong on the small side and the symptoms show up later, usually as one appliance starving when another one fires.

Around the Clock Gas Service is a licensed gas contractor, Florida registration LQ12177, working across Miami-Dade and Broward County.

Here is the part worth saying out loud. If you’re adding a dryer and the existing line has the capacity to carry it, you don’t need a new line. Ask whoever quotes you to show you how they arrived at the size. Anyone who can’t is guessing, and guessing is what puts a 199,000 BTU tankless unit on a half inch pipe.

What Goes Into a Gas Install

The short version, in the order it happens.

First, the load. Every appliance that will run on the line gets added up, including the ones you’re planning for and haven’t bought yet. Second, the route. Where the line enters, where it has to get to, and what is in the way. Third, the material, which is a local code question and isn’t a preference.

Underground runs are their own problem here. Polyethylene pipe goes in below grade with a tracer wire so it can be located later, and it transitions to steel before it comes up. The water table across most of these two counties sits close to the surface on porous limestone, so a trench for a yard line can find groundwater before it finds the depth it needs. That changes how the work is done and it is worth knowing before you get a quote that didn’t account for it.

Then the system gets pressure tested before it carries gas. Not a spray bottle at the joints, an actual held pressure over time on a gauge. If it drops, the line does not go into service.

Generators Are The Ones That Sneak Up On People

Hurricane season runs June through November and the busy stretch is August and September. A standby generator is the one gas appliance people buy in a hurry, usually right after they needed one, and it is also one of the largest loads on a residential system. A whole-house unit can draw more than the range and the water heater put together.

Permits and Inspections

Gas piping is permitted work in every municipality across Miami-Dade and Broward, and there are dozens of them, each with its own building department. A permit adds time to the job. It’s still the right call, because unpermitted gas work has a way of surfacing during a sale or an insurance claim, and that’s a far more expensive moment to find it.
